The former USATC Whitcomb was the last engine operated by the New Haven and Dunbar Railroad. Started in 1879 with 5,300 feet of track, the railroad had 7 locomotives, 39 coal cars, 6 track cars, and a little over 13 miles of track by 1911. The Dunbar Furnace Company entered receivership in 1911, and the American Manganese Company succeeded the furnace company and inherited the railroad. In 1924, the Dunbar Corporation was formed to continue operation of the sand mill. Over the years, the number of engines was reduced to two and finally one. The line depended on the bluestone quarry until it closed in 1949. The closing of the sand mill in 1954 sealed the railroad's fate, and it was abandoned on August 31, 1955.
